Workforce Well-Being Collaborative: Addressing Employee Burnout - Lessons Learned From the US Military_102821

Hear how lessons learned from the military can help address the mental health issues that are becoming increasingly prevalent among members of the healthcare workforce. Unlike military combat units who go through extensive training and preparation for deployment to hotspots around the world, healthcare workers were not as emotionally and professionally prepared for their new roles to combat COVID-19. The impact of this has hit employees very hard in many ways.

Our speakers bring more than 40 years combined experience in military service and health system leadership caring for patients, inspiring future leaders and creating tightly knit and successful teams. Mike Hall, a former captain in the Medical Service Corps in the US Army, and Beth Decker, a former Nurse Executive in the US Air Force, discuss their assessment of the current state of burnout in the healthcare workforce, share evidence-based strategies for addressing these debilitating conditions and recommendations for the best defense to take in combating these issues.

During this session, our speakers will discuss: • Similarities and differences between the COVID-19 pandemic and military combat. • How the COVID-19 pandemic is contributing to higher levels of burnout in healthcare. • Strategies for combatting burnout based on lessons learned from the military.
